Dr. Steven Thomson serves as National Program Leader for the USDA-NIFA with a focus on programs and projects in Engineering that improve systems relevant to agriculture. He supports research, education, and extension activities in these areas. These areas include (but are not limited to) precision agriculture, cyber-physical systems, robotics, instrumentation and controls, and outreach/promotion of assistive technologies for disabled farmers and veterans. His Research and Extension background both as Lead Scientist with the USDA ARS and as faculty member at Virginia Tech includes aerial application of crop protection materials, irrigation management, crop modeling, decision support systems, agricultural safety education, sensor systems and electronics, remote sensing, unmanned aerial systems, mechanization, and general precision agriculture technologies. He engages Universities, other federal agencies, and industry to provide national leadership in Capacity and Competitive Grant programs.
